Before Beacon: A Life in Limbo
My name is Vinny*, a first-generation immigrant in my early thirties. After spending most of my life in BC, I moved to Victoria just over a year ago. I was grappling with a chronic injury that impaired my memory and concentration. Homeless, unemployed, and battling depression, I felt trapped in a cycle with no way out.
The Turning Point: Discovering Beacon’s BEAM Project
Everything changed when I noticed a BEAMS project calendar posted in the homeless shelter where I was staying. Initially hesitant due to mixed reviews from fellow residents about other programs, something urged me to give BEAMS a chance.
I emailed them and was surprised by their prompt response, despite a full schedule. Upon arrival for my intake, I was greeted with kindness and respect. The process was smooth, non-judgmental, and entirely accessible. For the first time in a long while, I felt seen as a person, not just a case.
The Support That Made All the Difference
BEAMS didn’t offer a generic solution; they considered my entire situation—not just employment, but a fresh start. I received personalized career coaching, job search advice, and interview preparation. They funded certifications like Occupational First Aid and Serving It Right, opening new job opportunities.
Beyond employment support, BEAMS ensured my basic needs were met. I had access to fresh fruits, snacks, and full meals prepared by others in the program being trained in the kitchen. Bus passes were provided, alleviating transportation concerns for interviews.
What stood out most was the flexibility and personalized approach. BEAMS recognized that each journey is unique, offering a tailored path that aligned with my circumstances.
Moments of Support That Made an Impact
One moment stands out: On a particularly busy day, a staff member, amidst handling multiple tasks, took the time to sit with me when I shared news of an upcoming job interview. They helped me fine-tune my responses and boosted my confidence, helping me feel prepared and ready for the interview
Life Today: A New Path Forward
Today, I have a stable full-time job I’m passionate about, and am learning a lot in a field that excites me. Thanks to BEAMS, I have a regular income and am slowly building a savings safety net for myself, and I have the time and space to address my chronic injury properly and have been able to make big strides in treating my depression. For the first time in years, I’m planning for the future with confidence and excitement.
BEAMS provided the tools to rebuild my life. Now, I look ahead, knowing things will continue to improve.
The Power of Community and Support
Reflecting on my journey, the sense of community at BEAMS has been invaluable. It wasn’t merely about securing a job—it was about constructing a sustainable life. While my perseverance played a role, BEAMS support was pivotal. They didn’t just provide tools; they instilled the confidence to utilize them.
Having found stability, I now give back. I also refer others in similar situations, knowing firsthand the difference BEAMS can make. Their work isn’t about short-term fixes; it’s about lasting, life-changing impact.
