June provided many opportunities for Beacon staff to come together around the values that guide our work: inclusion, respect, belonging, and reconciliation.

Throughout the month, teams across Beacon recognized both National Indigenous History Month and Pride Month, creating opportunities to learn, reflect, celebrate, and strengthen connections with one another and the communities we serve.

As an organization that supports seniors, children and families, job seekers, individuals experiencing housing instability, volunteers, and community members from all walks of life, we know that creating a sense of belonging matters. When people feel safe, respected, and valued for who they are, communities become stronger.

This year, staff at Beacon locations across Greater Victoria participated in an organization-wide Pride decorating contest, transforming offices, program spaces, thrift stores, and public-facing areas into colourful displays celebrating diversity, inclusion, and belonging. Teams embraced the challenge with creativity and enthusiasm, creating welcoming environments for clients, customers, volunteers, residents, and fellow staff members. The initiative was part of Beacon’s ongoing Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging (DEIB) efforts and encouraged staff from across the organization to come together in celebration of Pride.

June also included important opportunities for learning and reflection. At the end of the month, a group of Beacon staff participated in Indigenous reconciliation training, continuing our journey toward deeper understanding, stronger relationships, and meaningful action. This learning will continue at the end of July with additional training focused on Indigenous strategy and reconciliation, reinforcing Beacon’s commitment to ongoing growth and accountability.

The celebrations continued this past Sunday when Beacon staff and volunteers proudly participated in the Victoria Pride Parade. Walking together alongside thousands of community members was a joyful experience filled with laughter, connection, and celebration. For many, the day was a powerful reminder of the importance of visibility, acceptance, and community.

While Pride Month and National Indigenous History Month each hold their own unique significance, both invite us to recognize the value of diverse identities, lived experiences, and perspectives. They challenge us to listen, learn, and create spaces where everyone feels welcome and respected.

Thank you to everyone who decorated a workspace, shared photos, participated in training, volunteered their time, or joined us at the parade. Together, these efforts help create a culture of belonging within Beacon and strengthen our ability to serve our communities with compassion, respect, and care.

As we move forward, we remain committed to building workplaces, programs, and communities where every person feels seen, valued, and supported.
