We’re honoured to celebrate 50 years of helping people, empowering communities and improving lives. Initiated in 1974 by a small group of volunteers, Beacon started as the Citizens’ Advisory Committee to help address social issues in the Saanich Peninsula.
In 2024, we are proud to say we:
- Have over 500 volunteers and 300 staff across Greater Victoria;
- Offer services for at-risk and unhoused youth, including Out of the Rain Shelter and Meares supportive housing;
- Provide counselling and mental wellness support programs for children, youth and families;
- Operate the thriving SHOAL Centre, which supports seniors on the Peninsula, including over 70,000 medical drives to date;
- Provide licensed childcare with over 160 spots filled and 84 more to come this year;
- Have two Long-Term Care homes specializing in dementia, as well as two Assisted Living homes;
- Offer three employment services offices, and a program to assist young adults looking for work; and
- Run seven busy Beacon Thrift Shops that provide training and skills for volunteers.
Beacon is involved in an extensive network of partnerships, committees and initiatives—playing a leadership role in assessing and responding to community needs. Today, we usher in a new era of Beacon, ready and able to service our community at a greater level. Thank you for supporting our mission!
