We’re excited to once again be hosting many programs and activities at SHOAL!  However, some activities remain on hold for the time being: to avoid disappointment, please call us at 250-656-5537 to confirm when your activity is going to run, and if not, when we are planning to restart again.

Meanwhile, our community support programs continue to be offered. If you or someone you know is in need of any type of help, please call us at 250-656-5537.

Got some free time to fill? Want to exercise your mind or body? Take a look at the SHOAL Centre’s drop-in activity schedule.

May Update

We have completed our Community Volunteer Income Tax Clinic (CVITP) however, we can still file taxes. This is a free service to those who qualify with a simple and modest tax situation.  Appointments are not necessary, clients can  drop off forms for the remainder of the year. For additional details please contact us.

We are having a Mother’s Day Tea. This special event will be one of our first larger in-person gatherings that we will have been able to host for our community members. Everyone has a mother-type figure in their life. Whether it be yourself or someone you care for, we want to help mark the occasion with you. This event is right around the corner: this coming, Friday, May 6th at 1 pm. The cost is $20 for members and $24 for non-members. The cost includes, tea, refreshments and live piano music performed by Carolyn Solberg. To register, please contact us by phone 250-656-5537, or visit us at the reception desk. Register by Wednesday, May 4.

This Thursday, May 5th, we are hosting our second Choose to Move information session. After a successful first round of course work completed by our participants, we found that there was a demand to run this program again. This free information session will be hosted by Anita Ferris who will provide a wealth of material and insight to see if you and the program are a good fit for one another. Registration for this information session is not required. Time: 1pm. Location: SHOAL Centre.

May is Family Caregiver Awareness Month. Beacon Community Services offers a good range of support resources and networking opportunities that can help you or someone you know in this type of situation. A feature page with information and a special outing detailed on page 8 of the May/June TideLines.

Vaccination Status Update

In compliance with the requirements of the public health order everyone entering the SHOAL Centre must have two doses of a COVID-19 vaccine. Staff will ask to see your proof of vaccination along with government issued photo ID. We thank you in advance for your patience as we navigate this new procedure. Masks are mandatory in all common areas including meeting rooms at the centre.

Choose To Move

Being active is one of the most important things you can do to maintain your overall health. It can help you feel better, be stronger and keep your independence. In partnership with the Active Aging Society we are excited to be able to offer this program at SHOAL.

DO YOU CHOOSE TO MOVE? Making a change to become more active can be tougher than it seems. It’s hard to do it alone, and without support; that’s why this program was developed. It’s a science-based approach to help you introduce the habit of physical activity into your life in ways that make sense for you. This free 3-month program provides you with the motivation and support to become more active. It can help you integrate activity into your daily routine, meet new friends and make a positive change! It’s for seniors 65 and older who want to become more active, regardless of ability. To learn more, register for the next information session by calling 250-656-5537.

Information session will be held on Thursday, May 5.
